WELLINGTON, FL (April 4, 2011) – Now that the Sport of Kings winds down its high-goal season in South Florida, International Polo Club Palm Beach is turning its sights to the First Annual International Weekend. With pristine polo fields ideal for hosting some of the oldest and most rough-and- tumble sports in history, the weekend-long event will feature several internationally played sports including: rugby, cricket, field hockey, polo, croquet, golf and tennis. The tournament will take place Saturday and Sunday April 23 -24, 2011.
Said Paul Hope, International Polo Club’s Tennis Director, “IPC is excited to present some of the world’s most famous sports, including cricket and rugby, which are responsible for successfully launching what have become America’s favorite pastimes - football and baseball."
The inaugural event is the brainchild of International Polo Club Palm Beach, which wants to utilize the Club as an on-going sporting venue for a variety of traditional, international sports in addition to its namesake sport, polo, which began some 2,000 years ago. In keeping with its’ tradition of respecting sports of history, like polo, the nation’s number one polo club, International Polo Club Palm Beach, is pleased to host an event of this caliber and create a new tradition in South Florida.
With the Republic of South Africa being named as the featured nation of the sporting weekend, other participating nations include: Argentina, Canada, Great Britain, Egypt, Jamaica, Trinidad, and the U.S. The Republic of South Africa’s strong presence in South Florida seemed the ideal fit as the first country to be featured in this annual event, with more than 30,000 South Africans residing in the area.
“We are thrilled to be hosting several top athletes from the United States and around the world at our unique, first-class facility that can easily handle all of these diverse sports, and we look forward to growing this event each year with a new nation featured annually,” Hope continued. “This is a great opportunity for spectators to watch some of the oldest sports known to mankind and to see the origins of baseball and football.”
Events in each discipline will take place daily kicking off each morning at 9:00 AM. The weekend will culminate with an Easter Egg Hunt on Piaget Field before the featured South Africa versus the United States polo match on Sunday, April 24 at 3:00 PM.
