THE HISTORIC ANN NORTON SCULPTURE GARDENS PRESENTS ENRIQUE CHAVARRIA’S WORLD OF FANTASY, OCTOBER 24 – NOVEMBER 23, 2012

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA (September 28, 2012) – The Galleries of the historic Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens will be filled with the paintings and drawings of Enrique Chavarria beginning October 24-November 23.

Enrique Chavarria (1927-1998) was a Mexican painter whose neo-surrealist works occasionally remind one of two well-known Mexican artists, Remedios Varo and Leonora Carrington. A recluse, Chavarria read widely, and the dreamlike qualities of his fantasies reflect his wide-ranging scholarly interests from literary classics to the magical realism of Latin America. Works of neo-surrealists such as Varo, Carrington and Chavarria tend to be less personal and analytical than the classic surrealism of Salvador Dalí.

Enrique Chavarria’s paintings and drawings have been exhibited at the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science in Tallahassee, the Florida International Museum in St. Petersburg, the Miami Museum of Science & Planetarium, and the ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries. His iconography, reflecting a deep knowledge of myth, fantasy, and natural history, is often infused with a concern for the human condition. The artist once stated that his fantastic art may help “gain awareness of a world that is destroying itself, and find oneself with a miracle, to discover hope.”

An opening reception for museum members will take place Wednesday November 14 from
6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.  For more information please visit: www.ansg.org or call: 561-832.5328.

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (July 26, 2012) – On Wednesday July 18, local interior designers and related businesses convened at PGA National to unveil their room themes by displaying storyboards for the first KidSanctuary Campus home. The home and its interiors will be complete by late November with an Official Ribbon Cutting to show each designer’s rooms on November 30.  Events will continue throughout the weekend with a Designer Showcase Open House on December 1-2 at its location at 555 Safe Haven Drive, West Palm Beach, 33411.  The Designer Showcase Open House will be open to the public with tickets going on sale in October.

KidSanctuary Campus, Inc. is a charitable organization located in Palm Beach County committed to assisting children who have been removed from their home because of neglect and abuse. With land donated by Palm Beach County, and a capital campaign currently in place, the five-acre residential facility broke ground with its first home on October 5, 2011. The J.M. Rubin Foundation has sponsored the first house to be named, The Rubin Cottage.  The second home has been sponsored and the ground breaking is estimated to take place in February, 2013. KidSanctuary Campus President, Connie Frankino said, “A roster of our area’s top designers and vendors have come together to offer their services to create a spectacular design showcase that will be a safe haven for children who deserve an environment that is trustworthy, dependable, and reliable. With the construction of the first house nearly complete, we are excited about moving towards the interiors of the home and seeing each of the designer concepts tonight really helped bring the vision to reality. We are thankful for everyone’s philanthropic efforts that will impact so many children for years to come.”

Says Design Chair, Angela Reynolds, “Tonight we had the opportunity to meet and share our vision by displaying concept boards for everyone to see.  It was special to hear the designer’s enthusiasm as they explain how the kids will relate and function in the space.  The designers went that extra mile to create a magical space for the children. The dining room has a Dr. Zuess theme, one of the bedrooms has a modern wooded theme, and the living room was so over the top fabulous. At the reception we realized we had collaborated to create something amazing and we all had goose bumps while we all shared our designs.”

THE HISTORIC ANN NORTON SCULPTURE GARDENS PRESENTS ANTHOLOGY: DRAWING & SCULPTURE BY ANN NORTON, SEPT 4 – OCT 10, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Contact:  Linda Soper - (612) 308-4159

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA (September 11, 2012) – Currently on display throughout the galleries at the Ann Norton Sculpture Garden are Norton’s design diaries and placeholders of her sculptural ideas prior to creating the three dimensional works that can be found throughout the sculpture garden.

Says Cynthia Palmieri, Executive Director of the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, “From a charcoal line study of a mountain-like structure to brilliantly colored works from her Tibetan series, Norton’s drawings exhibit no hesitation and stand strong and separate from the subjects they represent.” Norton later introduced color into her sketches, perhaps in imagining the translation into brick or other natural materials that she used to create her monumental sculptures. She continued to draw throughout her life, clarifying her vision for the works even while working three-dimensionally in wood and bronze.

Born in Selma, Alabama, Ann Vaughn Weaver drew from the time she was 5 years old and received her first sculpting tool at age 8. Like many young artists, Ann moved to New York to study at the National Academy of Design, Arts Student League of New York and Cooper Union. She studied with artists John Hovannes, Leon Kroll, Jose de Creft, and was studio assistant to Alexander Archipenko.  While in New York, Ann’s work was well received and she participated in group shows at the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art and was the recipient of two Carnegie Traveling Fellowships. During her career she participated in solo and group exhibitions at the Schneider Gallery, Rome, Musée Rodin, Paris, Bodley Gallery, New York, Max Hutchinson Gallery, New York, Lowe Museum of Art, Miami, The Society of the Four Arts, Palm Beach and the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach.

In 1977 Ann Weaver Norton had the foresight to establish a foundation: Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, Inc. Ann sought to preserve the historically significant art studio, the sculpture gardens and the architecture that comprise what is now the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens - a unique national and local treasure. Ann lived and worked at 2051 South Flagler Drive in West Palm Beach for 34 years until the time of her death in 1982. The Gardens is now operated as a private foundation supported by an open membership, Garden Conservancy, and an elective Board of Trustees. Available services include: Exhibitions, guided tours of the gardens and Norton's original sculpture studio, guest lectures, and educational programs. All programs promote a preservation ethic and incorporate the arts, environmental awareness, and interpretive history of Ann Weaver Norton.

A member/guest reception will be held Wednesday October 10 from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m.  For more information please visit: www.ansg.org or call: 561-832.5328.
