PALM BEACH (March 2, 2013) – Janis Aldridge, Inc. has officially
opened in Palm Beach and celebrated the occasion with an evening soiree to
welcome clients, friends, and supporters at its 319 Peruvian Avenue location on
Thursday, February 28, 2013. Under a beautiful Sperry Sailcloth Tent, guests
enjoyed cocktails and hors d'œuvres and mingled throughout the shop. Aldridge,
who also has a seasonal shop in Nantucket, brings to this new premise her
collection of works by contemporary American and European artists; decorative
antique and contemporary furniture and accessories; and 17th – 20th
century natural history engravings.
Says Aldridge, “Most of the
items we offer for sale are unique and one of a kind. A large part of our inventory
is composed of ‘pretty pictures,’ and that was our starting point;
illustrations of natural history (botanicals mainly) printed from copper plates
and hand colored. We are known for out thoughtful presentation of these
images - specifically our frames, their finish and proportion.”
The Palm Beach store
features the recent works of American Paper Sculptor Mellie Cooper,
specifically that of her “Leggy Birds” series. The images, which become the
centerpiece of the work were researched and borrowed from selections of Natural
History prints by Audubon, Catesby, Stewart, and others whose intent was to
document bird life. The images are
framed by tromp l’oeil shells and rope, all part of one piece of paper. The
store also features an exclusive collection of hand blown, hand etched crystal
lamps in a distinctive array of colors.
Aldridge’s mantra
to business and the secret to life is simple. “Do what you love and you will
love what you do.” Aldridge often is asked the question of how her inventory is
chosen and purchased for her store.
“We sell the things I would like for my own home. I never consider what will “sell” as a
factor when I buy something for my store. That way, if it doesn’t sell, its
still a part of my personal collection.”
